SCILAB: The Limit is the Sky
SCILAB: The Limit is the Sky
The objective of this Blog is to give you fare idea about the Scilab, Application areas of Scilab, several projects where Scilab is in use, and features available on Scilab India portal (http://www.scilab.in).
Scilab is a free/libre and open source scientific software package for numerical computations that provides a powerful open computing environment for engineering and scientific applications. Since 1994, the software has been distributed freely, along with the source code, via the Internet. It is currently used in educational and industrial environments around the world.
Scilab cab be used in following areas.
- Linear Algebra and Optimisation
- Control System analysis and design
- Signal Processing
- Image and Video Processing
- Data analysis, regression, interpolation visualisation and statistics
- Communication
- Differential Equations
- Chemical Engineering
- Electronics and logical systems
- Thermo-hydraulics and mechanical engineering
- Artificial Neural Networks
- Hardware Access and Real-time control
- Graph Theory
- Number Theory
- Cryptography
Textbook Companion Project
The Textbook Companion Project aims to port worked out examples and select exercise problems from standard textbooks using a Free/Libre and open source software system, such as Scilab. Any standard textbook can be used for this purpose.
The objectives of this project are:
- To make it easy for users of such textbooks to start using Scilab
- To improve the documentation available for Scilab
Labs Migration Project
Labs Migration Project is the project in which we help you in shifting labs from MATLAB to Scilab?
We have already shifted following labs from MATLAB to Scilab:
Delhi University
- Signals and Systems
- Numerical Methods
SASTRA University
- Signal Processing

Scilab is also used in following project
Data Acquisition using Scilab
Data acquisition systems (DAQ or DAS) typically convert analog waveforms into digital values for processing. The components of data acquisition systems include: Sensors, Signal conditioning circuitry, Analog-to-digital converters, Digital to Analog Converters etc. A DAQ hardware interfaces between the analog signal and a PC. The hardware could be in the form of modules that can be connected to the computer's ports (parallel, serial, USB, etc.) or cards connected to slots (PCI, PCI-Express, etc.) in the mother board.
Most of these DAQ hardware work only on Microsoft Windows environment and they require the use of proprietary software and drivers. Here, using a set of Spoken tutorials, we teach you to access these DAQ hardware in Linux using a FLOSS tool called Scilab. We have used Ubuntu Linux 10.04, kernel version 2.6.32-24. The version of Scilab required is 5.3.0 or higher. The DAQ hardware used in these tutorials are one among : Advantech PCI 1711, Measurement Computing PCI DAS-1002 and Measurement Computing PCI-DDA8/16.

Can one install Matlab on ones PC while they have installed Scilab on their PC?
Will they cause any problem?
I am using Windows XP SP3.
Thanks.
